Mexico's president rips Trump over wall, auto companies, NAFTA

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto stepped up his attack on

President-elect Trump this week, blasting calls for his country to

pay for the anti-immigration wall the new administration wants and

Trump's success in talking U.S. automakers to stay home and not

move to Mexico. In a meeting with Mexican diplomats, Nieto said

that Trump will find no cooperation south of the border. Basic

principles such as our sovereignty, the national interest and the

protection of our compatriots are not negotiable, he said. It is clear

that we have some differences with the next U.S. government, such

as the issue of a wall that Mexico, of course, will not pay, Nieto

said. And, he added, Mexico will not accept anything against our

dignity, according to the website Departmento 19.

Ryan: Sanctuary Cities ‘Are a Violation of the Rule of Law,’ ‘You’ve Got to Enforce the Law’ to Get Federal Assistance

During a town hall with CNN on Thursday, House Speaker Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI) said, “Sanctuary cities are a violation of the rule of law and they are not to be tolerated. … And that means if you want federal assistance, you’re not going to get it. You’ve got to enforce the law.”
Ryan said on sanctuary cities, “Donald and I agree completely on that. There is no daylight between us on that. so, what do I mean that? Sanctuary cities are a violation of the rule of law and they are not to be tolerated. We agree with that 100%. And that means if you want federal assistance, you’re not going to get it. You’ve got to enforce the law.”
He added that Congress is working on two things: “to secure the border, and to enforce our laws with respect to criminal — violent criminals who are illegal aliens.” And that border security is one of the top six things he wants to accomplish this year.

An illegal immigrant from El Salvador is being accused of sexually assaulting a 5 year-old girl in Fullerton, California.

Rigoberto Arevalo Cubias, 30, is being accused by the Fullerton Police Department of “engaging in sexual intercourse of sodomy” with a 5-year-old, as Fox News reported.
Cubias, according to Fullerton police, goes by a number of aliases, including Jose Cubias, Jose Cubias Arevalo, Jose Riberto Cubias and Jose Alfonso Cubias Arevalo.
Cubias also has an outstanding $50,000 arrest warrant from 2014 when he got a DUI for drunk driving. Fullerton police expect that Cubias may have gotten rid of his vehicle and cellphone in order to evade capture.
“Detectives believe that Cubias now knows he is wanted by police and he is on the run from law enforcement,” Fullerton police said in a news release.
Cubias is described by police as a Hispanic male with black hair and brown eyes, weighing about 185 pounds and approximately 5’7”.
Fullerton police are encouraging anyone with information on Cubias’ whereabouts to contact Detective Carin Wright at (714) 738-6754.
The news of Cubias’ accusations against him comes just a couple days after the Santa Maria Joint High School District announced that they would make their public schools a “safe haven” for illegal immigrants and their families, as Breitbart Texas reported.
District Board President Carol Karamitsos said the policy was “super important for our students, our families and our community as a whole.”

The unbridgeable divide

For all practical purposes, there is no longer one America.  Instead, there are now two radically different Americas.  The Democrats led by the left represent both American coasts and urban cities, while the Republicans and their conservative base represent the rest of the country, sandwiched in between the leftist elites.
In days gone by, our country was represented by two major political parties that had the same end, values, and vision but differed in methodology.  Today, conservatives no longer share the same mission as the left.  Their missions are polar opposites, and the divide is unbridgeable.
While conservatives seek a return to constitutional principles of less government, a free market, and sovereignty, the left seeks open borders, wealth redistribution, and statism.
For the last eight years, the left has made considerable inroads with the election of Barack Obama.  Under his administration, businesses are overregulated and heavily taxed.  Health care was socialized, and our borders are wide open.  Sanctuary cities sprang up throughout the land, and the resettlement of migrants from hostile third-world war-torn countries were and continue to be given a welcome mat.  No longer is there any distinction between a citizen and an illegal for many in the media, our universities, and our local institutions.  Schools and law enforcement are told to look the other way when confronted with those who have entered our country illegally.
Those of us who seek to preserve our culture, sovereignty, and language are labeled as racists, bigots, Islamophobes, and the usual litany of insults.  Is it any wonder the left has stifled debate, since many of us do not want to be labeled as racist xenophobes?
Language is key when it comes to winning a war of ideas, and the left has succeeded in shutting down debate by resorting to name-calling and ridicule of opponents.  Fear and shame work, and no one knows that better than those who have successfully used it to shut down free speech.
Currently, there is a move by the left to censor conservatives on the internet.  George Soros, with his billions, and several left-leaning foundations have infiltrated Wikipedia with millions in donations.  The leftist Southern Poverty Law Center, the organization rich with Soros millions, cut a deal to smear and discredit those on the right.  As an example, Frank Gaffney from the Center for Security Policy and David Horowitz from the Freedom Center are now labeled as "peddlers of hate" and "conspiracy peddlers."
Censorship is commonly utilized in countries run by tyrants, and its use here threatens our liberty, while much of America remains clueless that censorship is even taking place.
It is imperative for conservatives to employ alternative strategies to get our message out to the public.  Monetarily, we are at a disadvantage.  Additionally, we do not have the mainstream media or press to support us.  Even though we still have talk radio and social media to advance our message, this too now has limitations, with threats of censorship and regulations.  We must continue to use these media to our advantage while we still can.
What can only be described as a nonviolent civil war between the left and the right has now infiltrated all walks of life.  The presidential campaign is still ongoing, even though the election is over and Trump and Republicans won.   The left hopes it can overturn the results of the election or impeach President-elect Trump.  Furthermore, Obama, unlike his predecessors, has stated he will remain in D.C. to obstruct the incoming president and the Trump agenda.
In effect, the left will not permit Trump and the Republicans to govern.  They and their cohorts in the media, Hollywood, and the universities will do everything they can to stop the will of the people.  Lawsuits will be filed and fake news stories will be planted to delegitimize President-Elect Trump and those who support him.
The call for unity coming from many quarters is a noble one, but how can conservatives reconcile with a Socialist Progressive agenda?  The answer is, they can't!
As a conservative living in the Socialist Republic of California, I no longer have representation.  We in California are at the mercy of the left, whose ideology and agenda we do not share.  The stark contrast between us now engulfs the rest of the country in a war for the heart and soul of America.  Each one of us must view himself as a foot soldier in this battle.  The election may be over, but the war continues.  Fight on!

Eight men own same as poorest half of world: Oxfam

The wealth of the world's poorest 3.6 billion people is the equivalent to the combined net worth of six American businessmen, one from Spain and another from Mexico
by AFP16 Jan 2017

London (AFP) – Eight men own the same wealth as the poorest half of the world’s population, a level of inequality which “threatens to pull our societies apart”, Oxfam said on Monday ahead of the World Economic Forum opening in Davos.
The wealth of the world’s poorest 3.6 billion people is the equivalent to the combined net worth of six American businessmen, one from Spain and another from Mexico.
Picked from Forbes’ billionaires list, they include Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg who co-founded Facebook, and Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.
Oxfam pointed to a link between the vast gap between rich and poor and growing discontent with mainstream politics around the world.
“From Brexit to the success of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, a worrying rise in racism and the widespread disillusionment with mainstream politics, there are increasing signs that more and more people in rich countries are no longer willing to tolerate the status quo,” Oxfam said in its new report, “An economy for the 99 percent”.
The charity said new data on wealth distribution from countries such as India and China had prompted it to revise its own calculation, having said a year ago the wealth of half the world’s population was in the hands of 62 people.
Inequality will be among the issues topping the agenda as the world’s political and business elite meet in Davos from Tuesday until Friday, when 3,000 people will gather for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum.
“Responsive and responsible leadership” has been chosen as the theme of the summit, which organisers said was a response to a “backlash against globalisation leading to two surprising vote results and a rise in populism in the West”.
In its report Oxfam called for an increase in tax rates targeting “rich individuals and cooperations”, as well as a global agreement to end competition between countries to lower corporate tax rates.
The charity also condemned lobbying by corporations and the closeness of business and politics, calling for mandatory public lobby registries and stronger rules on conflicts of interest.

PLUNDERING THE UNEMPLOYED: Judge orders Michigan to stop collections relating to alleged unemployment insurance fraud

Judge orders Michigan to stop collections relating to alleged unemployment insurance fraud

Judge orders Michigan to stop collections relating to alleged unemployment insurance fraud

By Debra Watson and Zac Corrigan
13 January 2017
A federal judge Wednesday ordered Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA) to stop collecting money from claimants accused of fraud. The order was the result of a lawsuit filed in federal court. The ruling covers the period October 1, 2013 to August 7, 2015.
Tens of thousands of laid off Michigan workers lost millions of dollars of income resulting from a ruthless and vindictive campaign by state officials in UIA over a two-year period. According to a new report, from October 2013 until October 2015 state officials used aggressive collection policies to deny or take back legally mandated benefits paid out to 50,000 unemployed workers.
On top of being forced to return much-needed income, unemployed claimants were accused of civil fraud and assessed penalties as high as 400 percent. Often without notice, their tax refunds were seized or, in cases where recipients had found work after a layoff, their wages garnished.
The two-year dunning nightmare began when a newly installed computer system at UIA named MiDAS flagged, in error, a total of more than fifty thousand individual unemployment claims as fraudulent.
The computer was used to go back as far as 2007, thus capturing funds from claims granted during the worst years of the recession. The number of claims was high at that time, a period when official unemployment in Michigan was in the double digits.
Late last year a belated investigation, conducted by UIA officials themselves, reviewed 22,427 benefit denials that were the basis for fines and benefit recaptures. These encompassed cases in which claims were automatically rejected and prosecuted solely as a result of being flagged by the computer program. The agency found false accusations had been made at a whopping rate of 93 percent.
“I’ve been trying to get my back benefits and they’ve had me on hold for two months,” Rick, a hi lo driver falsely accused of unemployment fraud, told WSWS reporters outside a state unemployment office in downtown Detroit. “I’ve been out of work since July, but I had to wait for my severance package to run out to get unemployment.
“I went to phone court and they said ‘you did this in 2009’ and so on. ‘How many hours did you work?’ ‘Did you do this?’ Who can remember all the way back to 2009? They told me I owed them $2,000 and that’s what’s been holding me up. But I won the hearing. I’ll see what I get when I go in there.”
The review of the rejected claims by the UIA late last year partly resulted from several court cases filed by falsely accused claimants. Despite these suits, including one filed in spring 2015 by the Sugar Law Center and the United Auto Workers in US District Court in Detroit, little money has been paid back to wrongly targeted claimants.
Statements by UIA officials in December 2016 indicate the agency has returned only about $5.4 million to just 2,571 claimants falsely accused of fraud. The agency claimed that they have been unable to contact some others who were to be reimbursed.
At the same time, the Michigan House Fiscal Agency revealed that the UI Contingent Fund, where money collected from UI penalties is deposited, ballooned from $3.1 million in 2011 to about $155 million last October. A spokesman from Michigan Governor Rick Snyder’s office told the Detroit Free Press this week that an additional $5 million was added to the fund in the last two months of 2016 bringing the balance to $160 million. This despite claims by UIA officials that the agency has reformed.
A recent report by the state auditor found that, while mercilessly pursuing unemployed workers, the UIA had done little to collect delinquent UIA taxes from employers who were required to pay into the system.
A separate class action suit filed against the state in September 2015 by Royal Oak attorney Jennifer Lord is still held up in Michigan Claims Court and the Michigan Appeals Court. Those cases relate to workers who received benefits after September 9, 2012. Lawyers in her office are dealing with statute of limitations provisions that could prevent some of those affected from joining the suit. This applies to those who received benefits in the earlier years of the computer-assisted look back who later had their benefits denied during the 2013-2015 rampage by state officials.
How many unemployed workers continue to be victims of the bogus fraud allegations is unclear. A second phase of review is finding the same 93 percent error rate among about 31,000 additional cases denied during the same 2013-2015 period. These were denials not subject to last fall’s initial internal UIA review because, though flagged by the computer, they had some further input from agency employees.
The UIA has promised reform, claiming benefit reviews will improve with now-mandated human input, though state agencies are woefully understaffed. Layoffs, pay cuts, and heavy turnover in state offices coupled with punitive pension reform have gutted staff, particularly in social service positions.
A seasonal landscaper from Detroit told WSWS reporters he’s been waiting since December to receive unemployment benefits. Every year he is laid off for the winter and depends on unemployment benefits to get by.
“I was laid off in December. I’ve been working all year. I already have a call back date for Spring.
“The day I got laid off, they [the unemployment office] told me ‘we’re too busy, come into the unemployment office.’ I’ve done that three times. It’s worked every year, except for this one.”
“We’re broke, we got nothing. I’m pretty much homeless now. If I don’t get my unemployment benefits today, I’m going to lose $1,400 of back pay—and I’ll lose everything.”
UIA lost a large percentage of its staff during the same time frame that the new computer system was installed, resulting in a collapse of service for clients, called “customers” by the agency. Even as unemployed workers began to realize their current sources of income were being dunned, the agency admits it was ignoring claimants' requests for assistance. There are estimates that during some months in 2014, UIA was taking only ten percent of claimant calls for help.
Michigan has been hit by one scandal after another in recent years. The ongoing crisis over contaminated water in Flint has led to charges being filed against high-level officials. The bankruptcy in Detroit and the looting of city worker pensions has been followed by an international scandal resulting from mass water shutoffs.
Both Democratic and Republican state administrations have been involved in an assault on benefits vital for the more oppressed layers of the working class. It was under former Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm that the state started diverting money earmarked for welfare for poor children to replace funds moved out of state education budgets. This became legal under provisions of Democratic US President Bill Clinton’s 1996 welfare reform, and similar related practices are now being utilized in states across the US.
Snyder responded this week to the scandal surrounding the UIA error rate by “reassigning” the head of the UIA to another job in the agency. There is every indication that business demands to cut social service costs fed the attack on the unemployed. Even as the scope of the UIA scandal was uncovered, Snyder diverted funds from the Unemployment Contingent Fund, putting $10 million into the state General Fund to balance budget deficiencies. A similar diversion of monies from the fund was made in 2015.
This would not be the first example of the Snyder administration conspiring with business to cut costs. His “Nerd Fund,” an earlier scandal involving dark money from state businesses paid directly to a slush fund used by the administration, has been re-opened and operates under a new name. Under the rubric “Relentless Positive Action,” the fund accepts private, in some cases entirely opaque donations, from business and has funded right-wing initiatives such as the privatization reforms in education championed by Trump’s pick for education secretary, Betsy DeVos.
